Heather Watson blew five match points as she lost in the second round.
The British No2 was knocked out by American qualifier Jennifer Brady 6-2, 6-7, 10-8.
Watson’s defeat came shortly after compatriot Kyle Edmund had been beaten 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 by Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.
Watson, ranked 35 places lower than Watson at No 116 in the world, had served for the match at 5-4 in the second set. She had 14 break points, including five match points, in the third set and missed them all. “It was a tough day,” Watson said. “I didn’t play very well.”
Edmund never got going in his second-round clash against Carreno Busta, who is ranked 15 places higher than Edmund at No 31. “I just didn’t play well enough and he played pretty good,” Edmund said.
To add to British disappointment, Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares lost in the first round in defence of the doubles title they won last year.
