Scan will decide James Haskell's fate for the finals

10 April 2012

James Haskell will have a scan on his injured foot today in a bid to confirm his place in England's Rugby World Cup squad.

The 26-year-old suffered the setback in the first training session after team manager Martin Johnson revealed the 30 men he is taking to New Zealand for next month's tournament.

Haskell was supposed to have the scan before attending the official farewell charity dinner at Twickenham last night but was held up in a traffic jam after the M3 was closed following an accident.

As a result, Haskell will undergo a scan today with England medical staff insisting this is merely a precaution. However, the fact they feel he needs to have the injury examined proves there is real concern over his fitness going into Saturday's final warm-up match with Ireland in Dublin.

Johnson named his squad yesterday with Haskell expected to cover all three back-row positions during the tournament, highlighting his importance to the squad. Haskell will join a Japanese club after the World Cup before returning to London Wasps the following season.

Johnson is already preparing to take on Ireland without captain Lewis Moody, prop Andrew Sheridan and scrum-half Ben Youngs who are returning slowly after injury problems.

It means that Wasps No9 Joe Simpson should, at some stage during the match in Ireland, win his first cap.

The Twickenham dinner raised £39,000 for Sport Relief and two rugby charities.

Meanwhile, Wasps captain Tom Rees will be out for between six and nine months after rupturing his anterior cruciate knee ligament in a pre-season game against Agen.

It is a huge blow for the 26‑year‑old England flanker, who missed a large part of last season after a second shoulder reconstruction operation.
