Liverpool set to miss out on Downing with Boro desperate to hold on

13 April 2012

Middlesbrough will resist any offers from Liverpool for winger Stewart Downing.

The £14million-rated England player is back on Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez’s wanted list as he weighs up his final moves prior to the transfer window closing next week.

Benitez is still keen on Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry and has tabled an offer for Espanyol’s Albert Riera.

Stewart Downing and Albert Riera have both been linked with big money moves to Anfield

Everton have also posted their interest and the player was left out of his side’s friendly game against Udinese on Sunday night as his agent discussed the offers.

Riera is keen to move, having criticised the team and fans after the club’s disappointing end to last season.
