West Ham defender Aaron Cresswell has made his international debut for England in tonight's Wembley friendly against Spain.

Cresswell was called up to Gareth Southgate's squad as a replacement for midfielder Danny Drinkwater, who damaged his ribs while playing for Leicester.

And the left-back was given the nod to face Julen Lopetegui's side in the second half, capping an impressive rise to the top of the game.

Cresswell was playing in the Championship with Ipswich Town as recently as 2014, having been released by Liverpool as a youngster.

But the 26-year-old has thrived since joining West Ham and established himself as an integral member of Slaven Bilic's defence, which has ultimately led to international recognition.

Cresswell has not been capped at any youth level and spoke of his pride at being deemed worthy of a place with the Three Lions last week.

"Of course, I am obviously delighted to receive a call-up and it’s a very proud moment for me and my family.

Gareth Southgate will have one final chance to convince the FA he is the right man for the permanent

"It is every boy's dream to play for their country," he insisted.
