Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino awaiting news on Juan Foyth injury: 'We will have to see how bad it is'

Mauricio Pochettino is waiting to discover the severity of Juan Foyth's injury after the Tottenham defender required a stretcher following his substitution in the Audi Cup Final victory over Bayern Munich.

Foyth was introduced as a half-time substitute at the Allianz Arena, but lasted for just half an hour before going down and clutching his left ankle.

The 21-year-old struggled to put any weight on his left leg and needed help from two physios before eventually requiring a stretcher to transport him down the touchline and back to the dressing room.

Such an injury rather overshadowed an otherwise successful tournament for Tottenham and they will be hoping that the issue is not too serious, with the versatile Foyth having looked poised to compete with Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters for a regular role at right-back following the sale of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid.

Questioned about Foyth after a 6-5 penalty shootout victory for his side in Munich that followed a 2-2 draw, Pochettino said: "I will have to see the doctor but as Foyth left the pitch he said ‘Gaffer I have tweaked my ankle'.

"We will have to see how bad it is.”

Tottenham's win over Bayern came a little over 24 hours after a narrow defeat of Real Madrid, and Pochettino was pleased by the effort of his players across the exhausting two-day competition.

"Always it is better to win a tournament than to lose it - whatever the circumstances," he said. "I am very pleased with my players. We will take a lot of positives from this tournament.

“It has not been easy for us after losing the Champions League Final. When something like that happens it’s hard to get on your feet.

“But we are all sportsmen and we all like to compete so it’s up to us to find the motivation. I’m very happy.”
