Man Utd close to agreeing Daniel James deal as rival Monaco interest speeds up transfer negotiations

Manchester United are nearing a breakthrough over Daniel James after being alerted by interest from AS Monaco in the Swansea winger.

James is expected to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing of the summer – but a deal has been delayed over an inability to agree a fee for the Wales international.

United were hoping to land the 21-year-old – who is entering the final year of his contract – for a bargain price of around £10million.

Swansea’s valuation is closer to £20m and the two clubs have been locked in negotiations in a bid to reach compromise.

It is now understood that an agreement is close to being reached, with United’s hand forced by Monaco’s emergence as rival suitors.

James’ heart is believed to be set on a move to Old Trafford, which is why potential moves to Leeds and Brighton came to nothing.

But Monaco, who have a stellar record of developing young talent, could provide a tempting alternative to United.

Solskjaer’s pursuit of James has come after he reluctantly accepted that top target Jadon Sancho could be out of reach for at least another year.

The United manager wants to recruit the best young British talent as part of his summer overhaul – and is also eager to address the right of his attack.

While James has largely operated on the left wing, he is seen as being capable of playing right across the front.

Solskjaer wants to strengthen in every area of his squad this summer, with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward prepared to fund a transfer spend of in excess of £200m.

The Norwegian has expressed interest in Leicester playmaker James Maddison – but United are yet to make an official bid for the 22-year-old.
