Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has revealed he left the club due to his proposed role under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Spaniard, who has joined French champions Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer after five years in Manchester, says the club were also too late with their offer of a new contract.

The 29-year-old started 16 games in the Premier League last season and says that the role pitched to him at Old Trafford was not integral enough to tempt him into signing a new deal, despite Solskjaer’s efforts to keep him.

“I don’t like looking at the past but there were differences regarding the project and my importance within it,” Herrera told Marca.

“I was very happy, I have a lot to thank the club for, the fans and also Solskjaer.

“He did a lot for me to stay but things didn’t happen. They [United] arrived late [with the contract offer] and, by then, I’d already made the decision to play in Paris.”

Another United man who has long been linked with a move to Paris is keeper David de Gea, however, Herrera insisted that PSG already have two more than capable shot-stoppers in Alphonse Areola and Kevin Trapp.

"David is my friend, I have a great relationship with him and, of course, he is one of the best in the world, for me top three,” he said. “But here there are already two great goalkeepers."
