Jose Mourinho said Tottenham are suffering from “sadness” and low “self-esteem” after their abject defeat against Brighton.
Without injured talisman Harry Kane, Spurs produced a dire display as they were beaten 1-0 at the Amex Stadium and the problems are mounting for Mourinho.
Tottenham look like they are going backwards under the Portuguese and they are in danger of being cut adrift from the top four after back-to-back defeats.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Mourinho said: “Every team in the Premier League has its ups and down. Of course now we are in a difficult moment – results, injuries and of course self-esteem. And a team with confidence is a much better team than a team suffering with sadness.
“At this time we have all these problems that sooner or later we are going to go over them. In the end of the season we are going to see where we are, in terms of the Premier League and the cups we play.
“We did not start well and the goal . . . the team was a bit sad. My feeling was the team was a bit sad. And to concede a goal in the beginning of the game brought even more sadness and let’s say self-esteem.
“The team in the first half was suffering. The second half was different, a completely different attitude. The spirit in the second half was good. I saw people trying really hard. For me, of course a defeat is a bad feeling. Of course the performance was not very good but I leave with a positive feeling to my boys.
“I saw two different halves. In the first half, immediately we made two mistakes and one was a goal. I think the boys felt too much that goal that we conceded and the first half was a sad half. Second half, especially the last 25-30 minutes, I saw a team with a different soul. A team that was ready to give everything, a team that was ready to give everything and finish the way we finished. Probably the boys deserved more than what we got.”
