Former Chelsea defender John Terry has turned down a move to Russian Super League outfit Spartak Moscow.

The 37-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving Aston Villa at the end of last season where he started 32 Championship matches after being handed the captain’s armband by manager Steve Bruce.

The ex-England international was expected to sign a one-year contract - believed to be worth £3 million-a-year - with the Russian club after undergoing a medical in Rome.

However, in an Instagram post, Terry confirmed the deal was off and revealed family reasons were behind his decision to snub the move to Moscow.

"After considerable thought, I have decided to decline a contract offer from Spartak Moscow," he wrote.

"I would like to take the opportunity to thank Spartak and wish them and their supporters well for the rest of the season.

"They are an ambitious club and I have been very impressed with their professionalism. But after assessing this move with my family, we’ve decided this is not the right move for ourselves at this time.

"Good Luck Spartak."

Spartak, who are managed by Italian coach Massimo Carrera, a close friend of former Blues coach Antonio Conte, are currently second in the Russian Premier League and will play in the Europa League this season.
