Gareth Ainsworth and Gary Rowett are in the frame for the Millwall job.

Lions caretaker manager Adam Barrett is also in the running to take over at the Den on a permanent basis.

Millwall have identified former Burton, Birmingham, Derby and Stoke boss Rowett and Wycombe manager Ainsworth as leading targets to succeed Neil Harris.

Barrett, who led the Lions to a 2-1 win over Leeds before the international break, will remain in charge for Saturday’s trip to Brentford and wants the role full-time.

Ainsworth has impressed with the job he has done at Wycombe, who are second in League One after a strong start to the season. Millwall could face competition for Ainsworth from Sunderland, with the former QPR midfielder high on their shortlist to replace Jack Ross.

Rowett has been out of work since leaving Stoke in January. He had previously done well in spells at Birmingham and Derby in the Championship.

Millwall have spoken to a long list of candidates since Harris quit Millwall earlier this month after four-and-a-half years in charge. An appointment is expected to be made next week.

The Lions are 15th in the Championship, six points off the play-off places and six points from the relegation zone.
