Jose Mourinho praised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's moment of "genius" to get Arsenal's Premier League season off to a winning start against Newcastle United.

Aubameyang ensured Arsenal launched the 2019-20 campaign with a victory on Tyneside, with the Gabon international's assured 58th-minute strike enough to secure a 1-0 win in a tight encounter at a rain-soaked St James' Park.

Thirteen minutes into the second half, Ainsley Maitland-Niles picked off Dummett's attempted pass to substitute Jetro Williams and then crossed for Aubameyang to control before lifting the ball over the advancing Martin Dubravka.

It was a rare moment of quality in an otherwise forgettable contest littered with errors, and former Manchester United and Chelsea manager Mourinho - working as a pundit for Sky Sports - hailed the Arsenal striker's talent to break the deadlock.

Mourinho said of Aubameyang's first touch before his finish: "Simplicity is genius. That control looks simple, but it is not simple - it is genius."

Fellow Sky pundit Graeme Souness said: "Aubameyang made that finish look very easy. He made a difficult finish look easy, which is the mark of a very good striker."

Aubameyang felt it was a deserved win for Arsenal, telling BBC Sport: "We fought today a lot. It was a great game against a good team.

"It was important to start with a win, last season we started bad, so we are happy.

"It is always positive for all the squad to win the first game, everyone is happy to get three points and we're looking forward to winning more games."
