Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United debutant Amad Diallo is in contention to make his first start for the club next week.

The 18-year-old arrived at the club during January in a deal which could cost north of £35million, and has been adjusting to life in England by playing for the reserves. He scored twice on his first game, a 6-2 win over Liverpool.

Solskjaer handed Amad his first-team debut in the latter stages of Thursday's 4-0 away win over Real Sociedad in the Europa League, and could now be afforded more minutes in the return leg at Old Trafford.

"He's getting closer and closer to his minutes," Solskjaer said when asked about the youngster.

"That is why we felt towards the end when we had 3-0 up to let him enjoy his first 10 minutes for the club."

On a possible start next week, Solskjaer added: "We will make a decision after Newcastle. Couple of games in the reserves. Amad is getting closer. We will see how much game time we will get."

Paul Scholes was full of praise for the Ivory Coast-born winger, telling BT Sport: "I watched the Under-23s last week and he impressed.

"He looks like a really creative player at 18 and let’s just give him time to settle and we could have a really good player."
