Susan Boyle's performance on America's Got Talent was pre-recorded after fears that she might have a meltdown on stage.

Despite many believing the 48-year-old Scot was singing live on the talent show on Wednesday, it emerged today that worried bosses recorded her slot 24 hours before.

Boyle shot to fame overnight after a video of her audition for Britain's Got Talent, now seen by 130m people, was viewed via the internet around the world. But her sudden celebrity status led to an emotional breakdown and she was admitted to The Priory clinic in London for help.

A source on America's Got Talent said that her slot was blended into the show, adding: "It took the pressure off her and enabled her to relax and give her best."
