Revisit last year's news as Proud Galleries highlight the 2002 Nikon Press Awards celebrating the best of British press photography. The competition is open to all UK-based professional photographers for work taken in 2001, either published or unpublished. In addition to the title award of Press Photographer Of The Year, entrants are also eligible for a gong in any of the seven specialist categories.

In the era of digital manipulation and rolling television news coverage, many would argue the days when a published picture could alter public perception and be worth those 1,000 words are gone. But Nikon offers an evocative freeze-frame on, among others, the trials of foot-and-mouth and the triumphs of Ivanisevic at last year's Wimbledon Men's Final an obvious nod to 11 September and the subsequent destruction in Afghanistan. A reminder of the photographers' skill and the stories they have successfully conveyed.

Nikon Press Awards, from Fri 29 Mar, Proud Galleries, 5 Buckingham Street, WC2 (020-7839 4942)
