American Music Awards viewers were left divided by Selena Gomez’s comeback performance, with many Twitter users claiming that the star sang “off key.”

The musician, 27, opened the awards ceremony with her first live TV performance since 2017, singing new tracks Lose You To Love Me and Look At Her Now.

Lose You To Love Me features the lines “Sang off-key in my own chorus / ‘Cause it wasn’t yours” and some social media users suggested that the star might have inadvertently taken her lyrics too literally.

However others claimed that it could have been a deliberate decision by Gomez in order to bring the lyrics to life.

Some fans suggested that the audio from the televised performance sounded different to videos shared by attendees from inside the ceremony and praised the star's vocals.

Following her performance, Gomez said that she felt “good to be back.”

Sharing a string of photos of herself arriving on the red carpet wearing a lime green mini dress and matching heels, she dedicated her comeback to her fans “that stand by [her.]”

“Thank you to my entire team and to my fans that stand by me,” she wrote on Instagram. “All of this is for you and because of you, excited for this chapter.”

The singer also supported her close friend Taylor Swift during the ceremony, looking emotional as she performed a medley of her biggest hits.

Gomez was seated alongside Swift’s mother Andrea for the performance and was seen singing along and looking tearful during the special moment.
