Andrew Garfield has revealed the “societal” pressure he has felt to settle down and have children before turning 40.
The 39-year-old actor admitted that he has struggled to accept that his life was going in a “different path” in a new interview with British GQ.
The Oscar-nominated star reflected: “Releasing myself from the societal obligation of procreating by the time I’m 40 has been an interesting thing to do with myself… where do I start with why it didn’t happen?
“It’s more about accepting a different path than what was kind of expected of me from birth.
“Like by this time you will have done this, and you will have at least one child - that kind of thing.
“I think I have some guilt around that. And obviously it’s easier for me as a man...”
At the beginning of the year, reports swirled that the Spiderman actor had split from model Alyssa Miller, 32.
Then in April, it was claimed that they had rekindled their romance after Garfield announced he was taking a “break” from Hollywood for around “a month or two”. However, the actor has not commented publicly on his current relationship status.
The Tick,Tick… Boom! actor also expressed his grief at knowing his potential children would never have the opportunity to meet his late mother.
Garfield’s mother Lynn died from pancreatic cancer in 2019, shortly before he started filming The Eyes of Tammy Faye opposite Jessica Chastain in North Carolina.
He shared: “Life seems to be a perpetual practice of letting s**t go. Letting go of an idea of how a thing should look, or be, or feel.
“And that one’s a big one [to let go of], because of course I would’ve loved my mum to have met my kids, if I’m going to have kids. And she will. In spirit. She’ll be there for it. I know she’s there, for all the big ones.
“But, yeah. Life, life, life. Life is in charge. We’ll see. We’ll see what happens. I’m curious.”
