Shellie Zimmerman’s wife files for divorce

The wife of the man who shot unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in a gated community in Florida has filed for divorce.

Shellie Zimmerman made her decision less than two months after her husband George was cleared of second degree murder and other charges.

Last week she pleaded guilty to committing perjury during a bail hearing following her husband’s arrest for the shooting — and also told ABC TV’s Good Morning America programme that she was having serious doubts about remaining married. Her husband was not in court as she was sentenced to a year’s probation and 100 hours of community service, even though she supported him and lied about their finances.

In a short email to AP, her lawyer Kelly Sims said she had made the decision to divorce due to “disappointment”.

Mrs Zimmerman, 26, told ABC she believed her husband’s version of events but revealed she was not at home on the night of the shooting because they had argued.
