A British woman was in a serious condition in hospital on Monday after she was attacked with acid in a popular Portuguese holiday resort.

The 29-year-old suffered burns to more than 30 per cent of her body after her attacker threw a corrosive liquid over her on a street in Alvor, near Portimao on the Algarve, on Saturday night.

She was taken to hospital after being found screaming on the pavement in the picturesque fishing village before being rushed to a specialist hospital in the capital Lisbon.

Police are understood to be trying to track down an ex-boyfriend of the victim.

It was reported locally the woman may have been lured to the spot where she was attacked by a man posing as her current partner.

Her attacker, who has been identified as male, is believed to have thrown around two litres of acid over her before fleeing the scene.

She was assisted by firefighters before being taken to hospital.

It is not yet clear if the victim lived in Portugal or was on holiday in the area.
