An Australian football star has apologised after refusing to take a picture with a fan during the birth of his twin daughters.

Aussie rules player Eddie Betts was watching his wife give birth on his phone from a Melbourne hotel lobby when a fan approached him for a selfie.

Mr Betts refused as he was engrossed a the Facetime conversation with the delivery suite where his daughters, Alice and Maggie, were being born.

He has since apologised to the fan claiming that he feels guilty for being “rude.”

Speaking to the Advertiser, the AFL player said: “I felt real bad because I was so rude to him, but I was watching (the birth of) my daughters.

“So, whoever that dude is, I’m sorry. But now you know why I said ‘no’, because my daughters were being born.”

Mr Betts had been surprised by the birth of the twins as they were not due until the end of April.

The proud dad was unable to make the birth as the babies were born so quickly.

“I was in the hotel and I said, ‘What do you want me to do, get on the flight?’ And she (Mrs Betts) said, ‘No, the doc said they’re going to be out in half an hour so you’re going to miss it anyway,'” he told Channel 7.

Mr Betts and his wife are already parents to Lewis,5, and Billy,2.

He wrote on Instagram: "Welcome Alice and Maggie to this crazy family."
