Tory spin doctor facing MPs' quiz

12 April 2012

David Cameron's spin doctor is to be grilled by MPs over his role in the News of the World phone-tapping row.

Andy Coulson quit as editor of the newspaper in 2007 when its royal correspondent and a private investigator were jailed for intercepting messages.

But the Guardian recently claimed other senior journalists were involved in the activity, and that News International, the NotW's parent company, has paid out £1 million in civil damages.

It alleged that "thousands" of public figures - including celebrities and a royal aide - were targeted for "hacking".

Mr Coulson has always insisted he was not aware that the phone-hacking was taking place, and only resigned because he bore "ultimate responsibility" for what happened "on his watch".

Tory leader Mr Cameron has given his communications chief strong backing.

However, opponents believe Mr Coulson's position could be under threat if he does not perform well in front of the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

The NotW's current editor, Colin Myler, and managing editor Stuart Kuttner will also give evidence to the MPs' inquiry.
