Harman warns union over BA strike

Harriet Harman warned unions the BA strike would be damaging for travellers and the airline's future

Commons leader Harriet Harman has warned her husband's union that a strike by British Airways cabin crew would be damaging for travellers and the airline's future.

At Commons question time, Ms Harman, who is married to Unite deputy general secretary Jack Dromey, said everyone in the House wouldn't want to see the strike go ahead.

Her comments came as a war of words erupted between BA and union leaders ahead of crucial talks aimed at averting a series of crippling Christmas strikes by thousands of cabin crew.

Unite's joint leaders Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson will meet the airline's bosses to try to find a breakthrough in a bitter row over jobs, pay and working conditions.

In the Commons, Tory Andrew Mackay (Bracknell) said people would be "desperately worried" that they wouldn't be able to see "loved ones" over the Christmas break because of the strike.

"While it has been good news that Unite and BA might now be talking, can I have an assurance that you will use your considerable influence with the trade unions to ensure this damaging strike is called off as soon as possible," he added.

Ms Harman told him: "Both the Prime Minister and the Transport Secretary (Lord Adonis) has said that they like, I'm sure, everyone in the whole House, will want to see there not be a strike taking place.

"This is important not just for those who've got travel plans over this Christmas, either to go abroad to see their families or have their families joining them, it's also important for the long term future of BA.

"I hope that when the talks take place this afternoon they will reach a settlement."
