Britons killed in Pyrenees accident

Foreign Office confrims that two British hikers have died in the Pyrenees
12 April 2012

Two British mountaineers died after falling into an ice field in the Spanish Pyrenees.

John Peter Field, 57, and Richard Christopher Greenwood, 56, were killed in the fall near the 9,000-feet high Pico de Frondiellas in Sallent de Gallego, north-east Spain.

They are thought to have been hiking, with a third man who survived the accident, on a route covered with ice and snow when they fell on Tuesday afternoon.

Their bodies were recovered by a mountain rescue team.

The Foreign Office said the men's families were being informed of the deaths and that they were providing consular assistance.

The path they were taking, in the province of Huesca, is popular with climbers in summer but can be dangerous when snow is present, with avalanches being an added risk.

Mr Field was reported to be from Meriden, near Coventry, and Mr Greenwood from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. However, neither West Midlands Police nor West Yorkshire Police said they were aware of the men's deaths.
