Severe delays hit the Northern Line on Thursday morning after a fire broke out at Tottenham Court Road Tube station during rush hour.

London Fire Brigade was called to the busy underground station at 8.50am, to reports of smoke coming from the tracks.

Passengers are said to have been evacuated from the premises.

Firefighters arrived to find rubbish under the platform was alight, and the blaze was under control by 10.10am.

But TfL warned passengers to expect “severe” delays on the Northern line, with the warning still in place around 11.15am.

A spokesperson said around 11.30am: “There was a fire alert at Tottenham Court Road station earlier today but services have now resumed on the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line.

“It does mean, however, that the Northern line is currently running with severe delays.”

They were not able to confirm how long the delays will last, but said staff are working “flat out” to get services back to normal.

TfL says London Underground tickets will be accepted on local bus services during the delays.

There were no reports of any injuries following the fire.
