Covid: Hospitalisations rise in London but remain under crucial threshold of 400 admissions a day

Covid hospital admissions are continuing to rise in London – but remain under the crucial figure of 400 per day which ministers reportedly see as a threshold for new restrictions.

A total of 374 Covid patients were admitted to hospital in the capital on Boxing Day as Omicron infections continue to surge.

It represents a rise of 52 per cent in a week, with 245 patients admitted on December 19.

However, government sources told the i newspaper last week that further restrictions would not be considered unless admissions rise above 400 per day in the capital.

There were 3,074 patients in hospital with the virus as of December 28, the highest figure since February 19. However, it is 61 per cent lower than the peak of 7,917 recorded on January 18 at the peak of the second wave.

Admissions during the second wave peaked in London at 977 on January 6.

There were 216 patients in mechanical ventilation beds as of December 28 – a rise of 7 per cent in a week.

Meanwhile, there were 1,374 Covid hospital admissions in England on December 26, NHS England said on Tuesday.

This is up 48 per cent week-on-week and is the highest number since February 11.

London continues to lag behind the rest of the country on vaccination, according to the latest government figures.

As of December 27, just 62 per cent of Londoners were fully jabbed and 37 per cent had received a booster. Scientists say a third dose greatly enhances protection against the Omicron variant.

London remains the epicentre of the UK’s fourth wave of infections, figures show. The seven-day case rate per 100,000 people stood at 2,024.8 as of December 23.

The country’s most infected areas all lie within the capital. Lambeth had the highest infection rate in the week up to December 23 with 2,873 cases per 100,000 people, followed by Wandsworth and Southwark on 2,686.4 and 2,620.5 respectively.
