Bank and Monument Tube stations have been evacuated after a fire broke out during rush hour.

Passengers trying to get on trains at the station reported smelling smoke and burning as both Tube stations were shut.

Commuters travelling along the Circle, District and Central lines were told trains would not be stopping at the stations following the fire alert.

A London Fire Brigade spokeswoman said firefighters were called to Monument station after reports of a fire in the machine room.

At around 6pm the LFB spokeswoman said firefighters had been on the scene for just five minutes.

On social media many travellers complained of smelling and even seeing smoke.

Passenger Lee Harvey said on social media: "Avoid Bank station - just been evacuated due to smoke."

Twitter user Cassie B said: "Awful smell of burning getting on the Waterloo and City line at Bank. Stinks of burning and also smoke.. avoid!"
