It's a good value, stylish base to explore Berlin from, says Alice Tate

Whether you’re in town to explore or to party, 25Hours Bikini Berlin is the perfect base, offering good value comfort, style and atmosphere.

Where is it? Right next to the zoo and above Bikini Berlin, a shopping mall. Though that sounds a bit strange, it’s actually really convenient. You can walk past the zoo, through the lovely park and down to Brandenburg Gate and the city centre in about 25 minutes, or easily hop on a train. It’s not slap bang in the centre of town, but it’s very easy to get to/ from.

What’s the style? Eclectic and slightly kitsch. Communal spaces have juxtaposed elements: naturalistic materials, neon lights, and vibrant pops of colour. It feels trendy, but also inviting and with very friendly, helpful staff.

What are the rooms like? Cool and comfortable. As a group, 25Hours succeeds in making its hotels inviting, cool places to be, whilst mastering the basics: a comfortable bed and great shower. A good hotel is nothing without those. Our room was relatively spacious, with big windows lighting in nice natural light, an open plan bathroom set up, minibar, desk, statement brushed copper headboard, and slick bedside lamps.

Facilities: Rooftop bar and restaurant, coffee bar, bikes to hire, spa (that you have to pay extra for).

Food and drink: Breakfast at 25Hours will set you up well for the day. The buffet is served up on the top-floor restaurant so you get a great view, plus the spread is plentiful. Shakshuka on a breakfast buffet? Great. We didn’t try the dinner, I don’t think you need to if you’ve already had your brekkie there, but definitely head up to Monkey Bar for a cocktail.

Extra-curricular: Cycle! Berlin is vast so borrow the bikes for €12 a day and see so much more than you would on foot. If zoos are your thing, Berlin Zoo is meant to be a good one, otherwise, make your way to Mitte for the best food and shops. Hit up Monkey Bar at the hotel for a cocktail before heading into town to either eat or party. Hotel guests luckily get a private lift up to it, as the public love the bar too and the queue is pretty mental.

When should you go? Berlin turns cold and bleak in the winter months so for the best experience, stick to summer, when the city really comes alive. I’d say May – early October and you’d be safe.

The damage? From £87 per night; 25hours-hotel.com
