The 2017 MTV VMAs take place on Sunday, and while almost every celebrity red carpet plays host to a sartorial controversy or two, it's this particular one that is home to the most outrageous.

A dress code where seemingly anything goes, the Video Music Awards sees stars let go of all aesthetic inhibitions and take some of their boldest style risks.

One of the most memorable such occasions came from Lady Gaga in 2010, who set out to portray the message that she is not just a "piece of meat".

Arriving in a dress and ankle boots made entirely from raw meat, the queen of fashion controversy outdid even her own standards of contention.

This look followed one of Gaga's other bold looks, where she took to the VMA stage in 2009 soaked in fake blood.

She has also attended the awards wearing a full red lace veil, a shell bikini and a white square head-piece with a cut-out for her face.

One of Gaga's biggest competitors in the race to be the VMAs most talked-about dresser is Miley Cyrus, who is annually inventive in creating her numerous nearly-nude looks.

Silver metallic belts to cover her chest, a sparsely gem-encrusted modesty cover and a flesh-coloured latex bikini have been some of her most memorable, while a clear plastic mini dress with multi-coloured leather spots proved another post-show talking point.

Other stars who have stunned in different ways on the red carpet include Amber Rose in chainmail, Kelly Osborne's punk phase and Lil Kim's various nipple covers.
