The American Music Awards took place in Los Angeles last night with a proper red carpet and actual IRL celebrity attendees. The best part? There were some really good fashion looks.

The AMAs, which were famously the scene of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s double denim ensemble circa 2001, attracted some of the biggest names in music who, if the lashings of shimmer and glitter were anything to go by, were thrilled to be playing dress up once again.

British export Cara Delevingne brought the sparkle in a silver Dolce & Gabbana suit which she amped up with Christian Louboutin pumps and Dior Fine jewellery. The actress and model also rocked some seriously high voltage pink blush eyeshadow and an orange lip because, well, why not?

The more is more make-up memo was also received by fellow Londoner Dua Lipa, who championed a starfish-adorned bedazzled mini from Versace’s recent spring 2021 collection, which she clashed with oh-so-noughties icy blue eyeshadow, for her performance which was beamed in from the Royal Albert Hall.

And then there was Jennifer Lopez sporting a silver Balmain crop top with a matching side-slit skirt for the red carpet before changing into a LaQuan Smith mesh and velvet catsuit to perform new song ‘Marry Me’ with Colombian star Maluma.

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion made her AMAs debut last night with a performance of new track ‘Body’ in a twerk-proof sheer black bodysuit. Later on in the evening, she accepted an award for hit song ‘WAP’ wearing a zingy lime mini with diamond-encrusted hems and some unfriendly ‘F**k You’ knuckle dusters.

But not everybody upped the ante for what was arguably the last hurrah before whipping out the elasticated waistbands and mulled wine. Taylor Swift, who won the award for Artist of the Year, appeared via video link in a black turtleneck jumper as she revealed that she was accepting the award from the studio where she is re-recording her first five albums, which Scooter Braun controversially gained ownership of last year. In a similarly low-key vein, Katy Perry, appearing for the first time since giving birth to her daughter Daisy, wore a simple white tank top with washed blue jeans and a matching denim jacket.

The Weeknd channeled his alter ego from the recent After Hours album with bandages across his face and two black eyes (pretty much how we feel after this year too) while Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes made their stage debut together to perform their new song ‘Monster’, with the Biebs opting for his usual three-sizes-too-big jeans and a Cottagecore-esque gingham shacket.
