The DJ you've never heard of with a global audience of three million

Musical influence: Goldierocks has a global audience of three million
12 April 2012

She could be the most influential woman in pop you have never heard of. London DJ Goldierocks, 26, can turn novice bands into global stars and has recently seen her audience top three million.

Yet it is not MTV or the BBC that gives her a giant following - even though she has just appeared as a holiday stand-in on Radio 1.

It's with the British Council, the body for promoting culture overseas. Goldierocks, real name Sam Hall, presents The Selector, a two-hour weekly show created by the council to highlight new British bands.

It is recorded in London and then broadcast to more than 30 countries. The impact can be staggering. Alternative rock band Dinosaur Pile Up played to 3,500 people in Mexico City after being featured even though they had never been to the country before.

Frontman Matt Bigland said the show was a great link between British music and the rest of the world. "It's a killer show," he said.

Artist Jamie Woon had his single Lady Luck play-listed on stations across Kazakhstan and indie pop band Thomas Tantrum was approached to tour in Spain. Goldierocks began as a music journalist after a theatre degree at Goldsmiths college but then had a go at DJ-ing.

She started fronting The Selector two years ago. Goldierocks said the British Council was far from being "stuffy". "When you see the events they're putting on they're really cool."
