The best restaurant deals in London restaurants, including £15 steak frites at Maison Francois

After a wallet-battering December, cut costs this month with these bargains

The year is 2024 and many restaurants are struggling. Yesterday saw a high-profile closure: Tony and Becky Rodd called time on Copper & Ink, their charming independent restaurant in Blackheath. It will be missed — and falls among a number of food businesses to have already shut across the UK in the first three days of January.

Post-Christmas, classically and understandably, diners are reluctant. As businesses are looking for money, so too are we. But there are good January sales that entice and for those who are able, these deals, bargains all, are cause to return to satisfying tables.

Maison François

Actress Kristen Scott-Thomas was in not so long ago, if you need assurance. Hardly — the French brasserie in St James’s rarely disappoints. This month, between 2—5.30pm? Dishes for just £15, including steak frites, moules frites, and saucisse lentils. Those who aren’t on a wellness kick might instead pay the same money for a glass of Champagne and a “sweet treat” from the dessert trolley.

Elystan Street

Matt Writtle

Three courses for £35 at Elystan Street next. It’s not as if the menu is pared-back, either. Some might start with a salad of Burford Brown eggs, leek hearts, cauliflower, almonds and truffle, before moving onto a bouillabaisse risotto with roasted fennel and cuttlefish. Chef and co-owner Phil Howard is going all out. The offer runs from today (January 3) until the end of the month.

The Ivy

The Ivy Collection (which owner Richard Caring may soon sell, if rumours are to be believed) is to celebrate the West End original with an all day menu of classics. From January 4, each offshoot brasserie will serve two courses for £19.17, three for £24.17. The first price denotes the year the Soho restaurant first opened. Dishes include smoked salmon rillette, minute steak with mushroom sauce, and The Ivy’s famous shepherd’s pie.

Little Kudu

One of South London’s standout restaurant groups is the South African-inspired Kudu Collective, run by husband and wife team Amy Corbin and Patrick Williams. The Peckham flagship is worth a visit any day, any time, but in January, head to Little Kudu nearby. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, have a picanha steak or peri peri mussels and chips for £20.

Tattu

Those not keen on Dry January and the like would enjoy Tattu, very much a party spot where cocktails come first. Until the end of the month, lunch bookings (until 4.45pm) Sunday to Thursday are 30 per cent off a la carte, with dishes such as dim sum baskets, beef bao buns, Szechuan rock shrimp, and wok-fried noodles.

The Beaumont Hotel

The Beaumont isn’t among London’s oldest hotels but it’s very much one of its most beautiful. In its 1920s-style “Gatsby’s Room” throughout January will be a transatlantic afternoon tea which, on any weekday, will result in a free glass of Champagne. Sandwiches in Art Deco surrounds. Free fizz. Not bad.

The Abbeville

Clapham: a little desolate when it comes to dining. Most people buy charcuterie and cheese from Trude’s grocery and sit on the Common. But it has a handful of good pubs. One is The Abbeville, which is offering 50 per cent off vouchers to be used on the food menu, Monday-Thursday until February. These require filling in a quick form. A good deal, though.

Bluebird

D&D London’s Bluebird in Chelsea has a fairly wild deal available this month. Spend £100 or more and get a free bottle — not glass — of Lanson champagne. The catch? You have to quote the phrase, “January moments of triumph” at the table, which will be embarrassing. Be sure to book directly through the Bluebird website to qualify, and read the T&Cs.

London Shell Co.

Still one of London’s most romantic restaurants, London Shell Co.’s the Prince Regent will be cruising through north London’s canals in a budget fashion these first two weeks of January, with 50 per cent off food. Hello sailor.

Caravel

Sticking with the boat theme, though this one unmoving, we have Caravel, a restaurant on a converted barge moored on Regent’s Canal in Islington. It’s the work of Lorcan and Finn Spiteri — son of Jon Spiteri, of St. John fame, and Melanie Arnold, of Rochelle Canteen — and this month a set, weekday lunch menu is available. Two courses for £20, three for £30.

Hawksmoor

Steakhouse group Hawksmoor has pledged to "ease us into 2024" with a lunch offer that's good for the "body, mind and bank balance." Until January 31, diners will be able to have a rump steak, chips or salad for £19.50. All they need to is write "lean rump" in the special requests box when booking, or quote the phrase when turning up. The deal is good to go Monday to Saturday, midday to 5pm.

Quality Chop House

The old Clerkenwell haven of meat and big wines has returned with its first £29 set lunch menu of the year. Let's have a look at what's on it, shall we: brown crab rarebit with crème fraiche; bavette steak, chasseur sauce; Christmas pudding ice cream. An absolute blinder of a menu. On until January 19.
