Dancing with strings

10 April 2012

When Wayne McGregor formed Random Dance Company in 1992, few predicted his impact on Britain's contemporary dance scene. The independent dance maker had seemingly come from nowhere, but his bold innovations drew more notice - and won more awards --than most established dance makers put together.

McGregor continues to work as an independent, as well as choreographing for theatre and film, and more established troupes such as Rambert Dance Company. The connection with Rambert began last year when McGregor made detritus for them, and it continues this week with the new piece PreSentient (with Angela Towler, pictured).

On paper, the piece looks like a considerable shift for McGregor. In place of his more usual electronic scores comes Steve Reich's Triple Quartet played live by three string quartets assembled from London Musici. And, unlike the complex digital installations of his previous works, the new set is plain, while the costumes are short and flowing.

PreSentient will be the highlight of Rambert's week at the Wells, although there is much else on offer. Two short works open the programme: first the London premiere of a duet from Jiri Kylian's full-length work, Blackbird, and then Sounding from Siobhan Davies. Finally there's Grinning In Your Face by outgoing director Christopher Bruce. This is inspired by the music of the virtuoso blues and folk guitarist Martin Simpson, and draws on images of the American Midwest from the 20th century.
