When a world-famous primatologist goes missing in the jungles of Rwanda only to be discovered years later living in harmony with gorillas, it is just a matter of time before the psychoanalysts try to prise from him the secrets of his missing years. Trouble is, Ethan Powell (Anthony Hopkins) has not spoken a word for years, even during his incarceration for killing two of the rangers sent to find him.

Enter bright young psychiatrist Theo Caulder (Cuba Gooding Jnr) who is given the task of unlocking Powell's mind and tongue. I treasure Hopkins's moment when he speaks to the psychiatrist, delivering his first words for years. Peering malevolently from beneath an avalanche of grey hair, he says: "Have I made your f***ing day?" Sadly, the rest is a mess of sanctimonious eco-drivel that neither enlightens nor engages with the issue at heart.
