Horror face off

Freddy V Jason

On the face of it, the notion of bringing together two of the modern screen's most horrific villains has a tantalising logic - particularly when their respective franchises are showing signs of weakness.

Sadly, after a promising start in Hell where spectral child-murderer Freddy Krueger is trying to escape with the aid of Jason, the hockey-masked mutant from Friday the 13th - and one or two witty inserts such as the hookahsmoking caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland - Ronny Yu's movie degenerates into a retro slasher pic that simply piles on the gore and severed limbs until boredom sets in.

Given that Wes Craven challenged the genre so successfully with his postmodern horror Scream movies, this is a giant leap backwards.
