AIDSfree: '7,000 young women contract HIV every week. We need to help the vulnerable' - David Walliams' appeal on Day 7 of our 12 Days of Christmas messages

It's the seventh day of the 12 Days of Christmas messages supporting the Evening Standard AIDSfree appeal and David Walliams wants you to think about the fact 7,000 young women become infected with HIV every week.

The comedian and TV presenter is the latest celebrity to record a message asking for your donation to the appeal and support the Elton John AIDS Foundation in boosting awareness of HIV and funding access for testing and treatment, both in the UK and abroad.

Walliams says in his appeal: “It's incredible to think it is such a huge number.

“For me, that number became real when I visited projects supported by the [Elton John AIDS] Foundation in Ukraine.

“There were young homeless women living in -20 degree temperatures.

“An HIV test seemed impossibly remote but that could be the key to saving their life.”

Elton John AIDS Foundation projects in six key cities - London, Nairobi, Atlanta, Kiev, Delhi and Maputo - will be supported by donations to AIDSfree, and this week the campaign has been focussing on the fight against the disease in the Ukrainian capital.

Yesterday former boxer Vitali Klitschko, who is now Kiev's mayor, wrote about his fight against the stigma that makes young people too scared to get tested for HIV.

Walliams continued: “The AIDSfree campaign is highlighting people who are vulnerable to HIV in cities around the world, and in London.

“By donating, you are supporting projects that help vulnerable people get tested and stop them from dying from Aids.”
